It depends for tropical fish they can last up to 3weeks with 1proper meal and a coldwater fish can last up to a week.
If you have a 35gallon or more filled with fish you should get a low price mini 12hour auto-feeder just to make sure.
Also do a complete tank and filter clean up
Hope This Helps

This depends on how long your vacation is. As long as your fish are healthy and well fed they can easily go as long as 2 weeks without any food.
Typically I will feed them very well for a week or so before I leave and then simply shut off the lights and leave.
Many stores sell vacation feeder blocks but I don't recommend these as they often foul the tank and you come back to nitrite and nitrate problems in the tank. This is because they release too much food and it ends up not being eaten and breaks down into extra ammonia.

I quit feeding a couple of days before leaving, then just before leaving I do filter cleaning and water changes. That way your fish have nice clean living conditions, which is much more important than regular feeding. If your not going to be gone more than two weeks feeding is not a problem.
DO NOT use those stupid "feeding blocks" they pollute the water and kill more fish than they feed.
It takes a long time for fish to starve, think about the conditions in the wild, where floods or droughts may cause long periods with little or no food.

if you are going to be gone less than two weeks you can get by without feeding them. just make sure to feed them very well for a week or so ahead of time and do a water change before you leave. leave the lights off in the tank, and perhaps even lower the temp a couple of degrees. your fish should be fine.

If your going away for a few days to a week, then there is nothing to worry about, you can just leave them alone just remember to keep the filters aerators and heater going. Fish can survive without food for several days if not weeks.
