When shifting gears in a car with automatic transmission, does it protect the engine to come to a complete stop before shifting, or is it okay to shift while the car is in motion?

I don't understand the question. An automatic transmission does the shifting for you, while you're driving.

Or do you mean switching between Drive and Reverse and Park? If so, it's best that you come to a complete stop before switching those.

If you shift into reverse, then you need to be at a complete stop. It is not the engine that you are protecting but it is the transmission. While the wheels are turning one direction and you shift into the opposite direction you are pushing fluid in the wrong way. It puts more stress on parts and wears them more. It is harder on clutches also.

In a way it is something like trying to blow the water back into the garden hose, and then turning on the water while you are doing it. I know that sounds goofy, but in a way it is something like that that you are doing when you shift early. good luck.

As long as you're not ging fast and down shift + it's not the engine it's hard on the tranny,it's an automatic you don't have to manually shift it as you know unless you want to let people here the engine kakel for instance coming to a red light or stop sighn but i wouldn't recomend it or your gonna mess that tranny up.

OK Automatic transmission! there's your sign! You need something to do while driving! TRY DRIVING. Read and follow owners manual: please read it. Some transmissions cannot be down shifted with out wearing them out and others can be shifted manually with out problems with in set speeds. Next time buy a manual transmission if you want to shift for your self.

It is ok to shift in motion as long as you are not going into reverse, park or nuetral. Don't try to shift into a lower gear if you are going fast. Slow down to shift down.

its ok to go from Drive to 3-2-1 depending on the speed and its also ok to go from drive to neutral but make sure not to throw into reverse it'll make for one hell of a ride and tare the **** outta ur transmission but yes it is "better" on the engine to stop but u dont have to for drive to 3-2-1
