I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one.
Even when considering Asian-America women, who have been born and raised here in the states, you cannot deny that culture plays a factor. Asian families have different standards and values, than say: Hispanic-Americans /African-Americans /or Caucasians. While it is silly to automatically stereotype every single person, and expect every one to fit into the typical subservient Asian role, you cannot deny that there is some cultural influence. Ask any sociologist and he will tell you that your background, heritage and upbringing all come together to determine your behavior and personality.
Edit: If your Asian friend was adopted, she would obviously be an exception. Clearly she would have no Asian-oriented ties, no outside cultural influence. In this case, her only Asian attribute would be her genetic makeup, and that alone does not influence personality. One would be safe to assume that she indeed would be solely "American". However, your friend would be an anomaly since most people are not adopted and do in fact have cultural influences that modify personality.

I'm part Asian, so I understand this phenomenon alot. It's no different from any other racial/sexist/xenophobic stereotype - it's based on ignorance.
There is such a wide variety of cultures under the heading "Asian", and people of Asian heritage, like all races, are found in nearly every country. In America, Asians are often seen as "foreign", even if a family has been here for multiple generations.
I think one root lies in the populat media - this is like my mantra. So many sections of the population are under-representated and the few representations are stereotypical. Like all Asians know kung-fu!
PS
This Asian women are submissive stuff is mainly the result of misinterpretation of quiet demeanors and sexist portrayals of female prostitutes. Asian men and women are often seen as submissive or quiet - but the emphasis is laid at women's doors because of the assumption female = submissive. Some people think geishas = all Asian women, or women forced to sell their bodies are representative of the population (not that geishas are prostitutes).
A lot of Asian women guffaw at the idea of the "submissive" woman. What about the "dragon lady" stereotype? I hear just as much about that.

In western culture, Asian women is very submissive. This come from the perception that westerners had when they visit 19th century China.
But you can't deny that Chinese women are lot less aggressive than white women. For example a 45 years old women will not hesitate entering to a Club frequented by 20 years old to date a young man .This is an age when women have more sexual desire than when she had 20 years old.More and more white middle age women date young man nowadays. They even call themselves "Cougar" ,females who hunt for prays.
An Asian women with comparable age would never do that even if she crave for it.Asian women have a sens of decency that Westerners have lost since modern days.

Asian American women aren't Asian women, any more than African American women are African women. Both are American women because they have been exposed to American culture and live in its society.
Talk about ignorant.
It's true that the stereotype of Asian women being submissive is mostly false, but true Asian women (those that reside in Asia) are not like American women.

.
Additional: No, you only think you know more. This is more a sign of arrogance than ignorance, but displays qualities of both.

The common consesus from the cynical folks at Nomarriage.com is that American women are very direct, rude and demanding, and have priced themselves out the dating scene by insisting the guy pay for their dinner, take them out, etc, etc, etc, AND maintain the family, lavish them with gifts, blah blah blah, basically, the guy pays and if he pays enough, he gets laid. To a guy that doesn't go in for this kinda indirect prostitution and wins women through masculinity, this is a pretty gross idea, to be so used.
American women are jealous of asian women because the guys who know the rules of attraction prefer them, because they are much less demanding, and more submissive, because their cultural background is still orientated towards the idea that the guy is the breadwinner and should be respected because he is the man, etc, and is naturally dominant. Whereas american women in the dating scene are high maintenance and think the guy should submit to them, because they provide sex. Both the "submissive asian" and "jealous of asian women" ideas come from this.
However, the white suburban dating scene is far removed from Asian american culture, where it's a bit of a fashion/ghetto/cultural melting pot.
Good luck.

I'm not. Spent too much time in the Orient.
I think you are mixing apples and oranges in your question and statement.
True Asian women that grew up in the Orient are the ones that know what a man wants, likes, and strives to give it to him. They are groomed to do that very thing.
Asian Americans women that grew up in America are not usually groomed like the true Asian women. They have picked up the American women's attitudes.
Therefore the difference. Pops

I sorry, I'm not an Asian American woman. But the stigma of not being American was not by choice. Many asian Americans children have no idea that they are not 100% American... it's the prejudice that is placed upon us as we live our lives that pushes us away, to the point where we become Asian first and American second.
I have a friend that was in the Vietnam War, he was a squad leader in the Marines. Put his life on the line penty of times for Americans (excluding race). He went to a Vet reunion in Washington DC... Another vet see's him talking with a Caucasian buddy from the war... the Vet say's... "Hey why are you talking to that Go*k!" He replys back "You want to know who Jerry Chong is?" McCrosson asked. "He's a Chinese American, he's a Marine squad leader, he saved my life and he saved the lives of a lot of Marines. You insult Jerry Chong, you insult all of us."
... look up "Mac" McCrosson and Jerry Chong... on the web if you interested in this story.
___
As for Asians adopted into White families, it does still affect them, if a person is adopted... it affects them worse... because when, they are discriminated against they have no cultural grounding to fall back on... they will truely be a person with no country. Their family cannot truly empathize with what they are going through as society treats them as being different. I grew up knowing a black girl named Jean, she was adopted into a Chinese family... grew up with a chinese parents, a sister and a brother. I believe that she grew up fine, because her family could still acted as a support group for her while growing up.
(Of course if the Caucasian had experience living in China for a couple of years... they would be able to deal with issues faced in raising a Chinese child... so nothing is really set in concrete.)

I put heart and soul into being an Asian Caucasian, and I was a total flop. The people were great, but I never came close to being one of them.
People understand me when I speak Spanish, but I could listen to the Korean language tapes and speak clear as a bell, to me. The Koreans would be clueless.
Asian isn't American.
