I plan to buy a car within a year. However I haven't driven a car in 2 yrs. I have a valid license but i have been able to get along without a car so far. Some have recommended that I buy a used car because of my inexperience. I thought that I would buy a slightly used care next year, a 2006 or 2007 model (Nissan Altima, Honda Civic, or Toyota ), and rent a car from zipcar to practice on in the meantime for a few months. What do u think?

By definition, a used car is not a new car, although it might be new to you.

Unless you are an automotive expert, I suggest
* Depending on how long you drove a car before the 2 years, you might not need any refresher course ... a driver's ed place may make more sense than just getting a rental
* Visit Consumer Reports and other places that rank cars so you can see if a particular brand for a particular year has features and record that you like
* A car that is only a year or so old, is a heck of a lot cheaper than a brand new car
* You go to a regular car dealership and get a used car, in which you buy warranty protection, so that if there's any problems with it not disclosed at purchase time, the warranty protects you ... you can't do this if you buy car from some yahoo public advertisement
* find a friend who is a mechanic to take a good look at the car, and make sure it is Ok ... this person also share the driving test with you ... I don't mean the driving test to get a license, I mean where you take the car out for a road test before deciding to buy it, to make sure it handles Ok
* before signing the paperwork, visit various banks ... tell them you are in market to buy a car ... ask them about auto loan rates ... you may find that a local bank can offer you a much better interest rate than whatever is being promoted by the auto dealership

I think just buy used car at least then its all paid for , and then there is know car payments. leaving more money for you to put gas in it lol with the gas prices now. take care. maybe you can practice drive with a friend . out of town on back roads. just don't go on gravel ones if your not comfortable, or just don't drive to fast on them best of luck

I recommend buying a used car. If you buy a brand new car, its value plumments as soon as you drive it out of the lot.

A GOOD used car is the better deal money wise.
Decide what you want, (You've picked reliable brands),
and have the one you want checked by your mechanic.

If you can afford it, buy a newer used car. I guess just buy the best you can afford.
