Is it as cut-throat and overwhelmingly difficult as Hollywood makes it seem? What type of student goes to law school and what are some good law schools that aren't Ivy League or "Public Ivy?"

My colleague who is in his 70's says that it was like that when he was in law school, but I graduated from law school 8 years ago and, while it was competitive, it wasn't as crazed as I've seen in the movies. I actually liked it. I was learning interesting things from really smart professors among a wide range of bright people. I think the fact that we still have an listserv going for my law school class eight years after graduation says something about the fact that we were more collaborative than cut-throat. There are a lot of good schools out there; you might want to look at US News to get ideas for places which are rated well and which are located in places you want to be, then look on their websites to see what they seem to specialize in and know if it fits with what you are interested in.

There are so many different types of law, that no two students are alike, and each student next to everyone is there for a different reason.

People are people. Some students act like they'll be the first King or Queen of the United States, and some are very genuine and down to earth.

Mostly, it is a lot of studying, studying, and more studying.

You really learn to think outside the box.
