My washing machine has smelled like mildew after leaving wet clothes in it for too long. Always take the clothes out as soon as the wash is done. The only way I've ever been able to get the smell out is to run the washer with the hottest water and a cup of Borax in it. Borax kills mildew. Bleach does NOT kill mildew. You can buy Borax in the laundry section of the grocery store.

I'm not sure where your smelling the oder from.
If it is inside the drum your smelling the water that stands in the pump or the drain hose, Run hot water with vinegar through a cycle, or you can use bleach instead of vinegar.
If the smell is just in the area of the machine, look for a hose leaking and water standing under the machine, or that missing sock that got washed but didn't make it to the dryer it could be molding behind the machine.

the right way of cleansing a wash machine is to run a full cycle with 2 gallons of vinegar, just make sure to add the vinegar when the machine isn't full yet.
Good Luck

Pour in one cup of undiluted White Vinegar add to hottest water and put through a complete cycle without clothes added, your machine will be clean and disinfected and any residue buildup of detergents will be removed this will also add life to your hoses and machine parts. Good Luck !

Run a full cycle, adding 1 cup of vinegar (no soap). This will not only get rid of the odor, it will also help keep the drain clear.

First, use some bleach occasionally, for the whites.
Second, leave the lid/door open after washing.
You could also make sure the final rinse is clear water.

multiple washes, HOT water, bleach...if that doesn't work, ammonia... never leave washes in over night or more than a few hours, this will prevent the problem...good luck!
p.s. don't put clothes in the wash, just empty washes, or your clothes will get ruined:)
