Wd 40 is a penatrant and dosen't offer much lubrication. PB blaster or slick 50 are better. You could spray it under the dash where it goes through the firewall and hope it works its way down to the clutch. Also got to remember if its binding it might also be in the clutch or the throw out lever. What kind of car is it?

Its a good job there are some UK readers. I take it that your car is either vauxhall or opel astra. a common fault i have noticed with general motors european type cars is that the clutch & brake PEDAL BUSHES dry out & sqeak when pedal operated. I have used a drop of 3 in 1 oil on these bushes (not too much or it will run down onto pedal rubbers) work pedals to spread oil . JOB DONE.

DONT spray it with WD40 it is moisture dispersant with little or no lubrication properties. Get someone to sit in the car and gently operate the clutch pedal. Locate the noise, and spray in the genral area of the noisewith a good lubricant spray.

don't mess about, get down to your local motor factors an buy a new cable, it will only cost you a few quid more than a can of lubricant that wont work any way. You may need to find a mate who knows his way around a car to change it for you, its not a bad job buy if you can find it there is not much chance of you being able to replace it.
