If it's just a little round circular object the size of a tennis/softball, it monitors traffic flow. If it somewhat resembles a camera, you guessed it, it's a camera.

Red light cameras are quite noticeable. They look like big boxes. They are usually only placed at large/busy intersections where light running is a problem.

The traffic monitoring ones are the little round cameras mounted above traffic lights.

Our newspaper was kind enough to tell us where all the red light cameras are. But I've never really thought about iit because I obey the driving laws. Except for a couple of speeding tickets. :)

In most jurisdictions THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE. Anyone who has told you differently should not be counted on. Red Light Cams are NOT expensive at all. They're CHEAPER than monitoring systems.

They are easy to spot around here. All of the intersections that have them have signs that say they are being monitored as you get to the stop light.

You won't see them on the stop light. They are usually mounted on poles on the side of the street.

If you are obeying the traffic laws, what does it matter?

Well, why not just obey the traffic laws, and then you have nothing to worry about. . .

Umm, drive really fast and see if they mail you a ticket?

No, just joking. Don't do that. Really, don't do that.
