It didn't. The story was based on fact (the couple really did live there, and they really did report all those strange happenings), but the things they reported were deliberately staged by themselves.

The idea that the Amityville Horror was based on a true story is a hoax. I read the book when I was younger, but later found out that the events described never happened.

The most common answer is the DeFeo family that was murdered in the house. There is a lot of claim of fraud in this case. However, Jay Anson (the author) and several people involved in this case are now deceased. No fraud has ever been established in this case. Also, no confirmation of paranormal activity was ever established in this case as all the investigations were conducted after the Lutzes had moved out of the house.
There was also some talk about the house being built over Indian burial grounds but no one (to my knowledge) has produced written records to confirm this claim.

It didn't. The whole thing was a hoax created by the family to sell the book.
The people that now live in the house have had problems for years...all from people who are there for the "Horror House". They've had their privacy invaded, vandalism by people taking souvenirs, folks insisting on tours....
None of the claims made are true, no hunting's, supernatural events...nothing. They've had to have the house remodeled, to change the appearance, and they've changed the street address, in order to keep the idiots away...

Who, what, when, or the how does not really matter, what really matters is that demons(fallen angels) can take advantage of almost all situations... And create problems for people that are weak or strong........ And learning how to stop them is really what people should be leaning how to dealing with... For just leaving that home will not stop them from going else-where or following you and creating problems there...................

It wasn't, the son just went on a killing spree. The supernatural stuff was thrown into the movie to make it more interesting.
