across the road directly in front of my car. I was traveling alone with a small dog, and two cats, one of which started howling at the moon. I promise this is true. I am wondering if the owl had any signifance. Shortly after I found a town with a gas station.

Owls are a sign of death in many spiritual traditions.
Then again, they are also a sign of wisdom. When not flying in front of you on a dark night with a full moon, that is.

I agree with Charlee, it was probably just out hunting. There is Mexican Mythology about the Lechuza, a shape-shifting witch that can become an owl, but I've never heard of them venturing as far north as Colorado.

Owls are said to be messengers of secrets and omens, and they symbolize clairvoyancy, the moon, freedom, shape-shifting, wisdom, and the unconscious mind. They are symbols of both Athena, Christ, and Lilith.
But your interpretation of this event is more meaningful than an interpretation coming from a stranger . . .
