My computer was infected with a bad virus not too long ago, and when my dad took the computer in to get it fixed, he asked the one of the guys how they do it. And he said it's a secret. Is there some secret to fixing computers that only super nerds know?

Not only is there a secret, but it's *sooo* secret we're going to have to hunt down the tech your Dad spoke with and revoke his membership card. ;)

Actually, it's not too tough. They've probably got a virus-scanner or three that they run on the machine; using different scanners is like getting a second opinion from another doctor. Once the scanners run, they normally detect the viruses and remove them.

The advantage those guys likely have is that they've paid for the licenses of those scanners, and should they find a virus that can't be automatically removed, they've got the know-how to do it manually.

Fixing computers is not hard at all. Most people that fix computers run the same anti-virus and anti-spyware programs that you should and are more than capable of running. Another thing they do is reformat hard drives when things get too tough which is another thing that the average person is totally capable of doing. Places like Geek Squad at Best Buy make tons of money off of people and people could easily save their money by just Googling the problem for 5 minutes. I was actually talking about this with co-workers the other day (I'm a software engineer) and we saying that we're totally in the wrong business. If I charged close to what Best Buy charges for repairs I could easily quit my job and do basically no work.

Computer techs are kind of like mechanics. You don't know, offhand, what the problem is and you just kind of have to trust them. And just like mechanics, there are good (honest) computer techs and ones that will take you for all you're worth.

no there is no secret, run virus, adware, and spyware scan. if that does not work perform a system restore. and if worse comes format the drive and install a clean copy of windows. do not use p2p file programs like limewire and morpheus if u don't want to get viruses.

The guy probably doesn't like explaining the problem to people, so he said that. :)
