Follow the directions. Every time your baby takes a sip there is backwash from his saliva into the bottle and nice warm formula is a great breeding ground for any bacteria in the saliva. Make small bottles and give him a second one if he finishes the first. By the way, the same goes for baby food. Don't feed him directly from the jar if you aren't sure he will finish it. Pour some in a bowl and refrigerate the rest immediately. You can use it the next day but not after that. Don't save whatever is left in the bowl.

I understand formula is very expensive especially when your not on WIC, i usually make the last amount that i know he finishes and if he is still hungry I'll make him another ounce or two. After they drink out of the bottle its only good for 1 hour. If you prepare it you can refrigerate it for 24 hours. Hey you wanna talk about wasting formula, i dropped the whole container last week! A brand new Similac container, there goes 23 bucks, a crying baby, and a trip to walmart.

Once the baby drinks from the bottle the formula is contaminated with bacteria and should be discarded within one hour. However you can prepare formula up to 24 hours in advance (according to most directions). So make up 8oz (or more) but put 4oz in a bottle and warm it. Then if she is still hungry heat up another 2 oz, etc.

It can't sit out at room temperature for more than one hour. However, you can refrigerate it for up to 24 hours (read the package, its right on there). I suggest making about a days worth the night before. Then, put it into bottles a couple ounces at a time. You can always go back and add more if he finishes all that he's offered and wants more. One more thing, once he's started drinking from a bottle, anything that's left over at the end needs to be thrown away because any bacteria that's entered the bottle from his mouth during the feeding will multiply.

I am not big on panicking about bacteria, although one needs to be careful. When my baby was about 5 months old we had to make a trip, his grandfather was very sick and I spent hours and hours sitting in the waiting room of a small hospital in a little town in New Mexico...I didn't follow the 1-2 hours rule there at all...and he was fine with the milk.
I won't recommend that you use milk that is over two hours, but if you are out with your kid it's OK....even at home I sometimes prepare a bottle that he refuses and if I put it back in the fridge I will give it to him again 1-2 hours later.

Yes, if he's drunk ANY of it, it's bad within the hour due to bacteria. What's worse, wasted formula or your child throwing up? I would prepare a smaller bottle, and then if he still seems hungry, make some more. It's not a big deal.
I understand your concern, my youngest is about to turn one and we're looking forward to getting an add'l $100/mo back into the family budget!

Because of possible bacterial contamination, formula remaining in a bottle one hour after the start of feeding should be discarded. Make 4 oz each bottle and then make more if your baby wants more.

If you refrigerate it as soon as he's done eating it, reheating it later should be fine.
It's true the milk is unsafe to eat after one hour, but that is only if it sits at room temperature.
I would stick my daughter's bottles back in the fridge and reheat them later and never had a problem. I looked it in the same way as saving leftovers. If it didn't get in the fridge pretty quick, better throw it out. Better safe when it comes to baby.
