check the 8th digit of the vin # this is the engine identifier in the glove box there is a sticker with a bunch of RPO codes the engine code for 88 was LO3(305) LO5 (350) these were the ONLY truck engines available in this year you can also identifier the engine by the emblems on the end of the cylinder heads, if they have a small triangle it is a 305, if it has lines pointing upward it is a 350 or you can run the engine casting # located on the rear of the engine just right of the distributor (you will have to remove the distributor to view it on the 88)......all this other bull about oil filters and crankshafts is just bull the 305 and the 350 both have the same crankshaft down to the numbers and the oil filter story the oil filters that went in sideways were on all 4X4's it was a relocated to keep the front drive shaft from hitting the filter and if you need any more info my e-mail is always open ..good luck

Look at the front of the motor on the left hand side if you're facing the front of the motor. ON the right hand side if you're looking at it from the rear. Directly under the base of the head there's a machined pad that sticks out. ON that machined surface there are numbers. Those numbers are the key to knowing what year and what size and everything there is to know about that motor including what day of the week and what year it was made. Just write down those numbers, call a chevy dealer and someone in the parts department should be able to give you all the data on the motor. The good thing about a chevy is that a 350 will fit where a 305 was. A chevy is a poor man's vehicle. You can slip in almost any size small block V8 on that transmission and the engine mounts will fit also. IN fact, there are slots on the chasis where you can slide the mounts back and forth to fit almost any application.

all these engine blocks had several different casting numbers ; all located on the passenger side of the distributor, between the head and bell housing. these numbers will identify the 305, 350 and 400 small blocks. once you find the number, the wrecking yard or local auto parts store can tell you what it is.

there should be a sticker on the radiator fan shroud that says the displacment or liter size. 5.0 is 305 5.7 is 350. or go to a car parts website and look up the vin code.

And they did not tell you it could be a 400 cubic inch motor too. The data plaque on the radatior fan cover probably says faded out or 305/350 and you have a 2 bbl carburator if you have a quadrajet 4bbl carb most likely it is a 350 or 400 your Vin# will harvest rewards if you contact a good chevy historian. Or old guy at a chevy garage. Why not sell it and buy a much better modern truck? or spend your down payment on a 20 year old truck. With side mounted gas tanks.

You can look up the vin code if engine is stock and has not been changed.. Your vin # tells what engine the truck came with.
If you want to check the engine it's self.. Front pass side, in front of head and over towards intake some theres a pad sticking off the block.. Clean that pad with wd-40, carb cleaner, etc.. Look at the #'s. Go to www.mortec.com to decode the #'s you find.
Also rear driver's side of block, on flange where trans bolts to block.. Long # there.. Thats the casting #. Get it and look at mortec.com to see what it decodes as.

The 305 will have a bigger round crankshaft than the 350, pull the lower crank balance and take it with you when you buy so to match it. You can bolt up all parts from a 305 to the 350 except the crank and touching parts. The flywheel is also different in size. Good Luck and GOD Bless

Look at the engine id number. this is normally located on a machined surface at the front edge of the block, under the right cylender head. It may also located at the left rear edge of the block, above the oil filter.
