I feel that we are here for a reason and there are a series of tasks or obstacles or whatever you want to call it that we must face before we get to the real reason we are here. But the choices we make and the paths we take will lead us to the end of the maze eventually. However, based on the decisions you make and the paths you choose you may never make to the one thing that defines why you are here and who you are. So enjoy life and becareful of the choices you make because that will define your purpose ..kr
Good Luck!

42. Just kidding, I do have a serious answer, I just couldn't resist throwing that in. I will turn to the amazing Joseph Campbell, whose words I could do nothing to make better:
"Just sheer life cannot be said to have a purpose, because look at all the different purposes it has all over the place. But each incarnation, you might say, has a potentiality, and the mission of life is to live that potentiality."
(from The Power of Myth)
I think Campbell's words make a lot of sense. There is not a purpose to life in general because each individual's life has it's own purpose, a goal which you largely set for yourself. After all, why would the universe in all its vastness and expanse waste time in creating a plan just for you? That would be easy, for your path to already be trodden before you even walk it - just sit back and enjoy the ride. But the road of life is not a cakewalk down a level plain, but an arduous journey more like trying to go through a mountain; you must carve the path ahead of you yourself through the unknown darkness, mind the occasional cave-ins when your world collapses around you, and by the time you see the light it's all over - but it's more about getting there than the destination anyway.
"We must be willing to get rid of the life we've planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us."
That's Campbell again. You can find many, many, many wise thoughts by Campbell on the meaning of life and the journey to get there at this website:
http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/j/joseph_campbell.html
but I would also suggest you pick up one of his books: The Power of Myth is good because it is actually an interview and Campbell explains things very plainly in a way that's easy to understand - unlike The Hero with A Thousand Faces that can get very technical and loose its reader's interest. Campbell has lots of thoughts like this on life, of finding personal meaning and not letting any politician, philosopher, or one religion decide the meaning of your life for you - it's yours to live, so you should ascribe your own purpose, your own goals, your own dreams.
I'm an Apple lover personally, but there is something to be said about Microsoft's slogan summing this all up very well:
"Where do YOU want to go today?"

You cannot have real purpose without God. For purpose requires a design and a design requires a Designer.
“Unless you assume a God, the question of life’s purpose is meaningless.” –Bertrand Russell (Nobel Laureate writer, mathematician and philosopher)
Most of the answerers here are just telling you pleasant things to think about that will give you some meaningless good feelings, e.g. “to do good”, “to share our experiences”, “earn the most money”, “to help others”, “to see and learn”, “to learn to love”, “enjoy life”, etc. There is no reason to pick those things except they produce good feelings but if there is no God, there is no meaning behind the good feelings.
It makes sense to me that if we are seeking real purpose that we have to first seek God. This is because it is most likely that our Creator, if He exists, put the need for purpose into our human nature to point us to seek Him. So if you are seeking real purpose and not just some pleasant feelings, the first order of business ought to be to seek God.

I think that the essential purpose of all life, from the most microscobic bacteria to humans,is to reproduce/replicate itself but what separates us from all other life (to the best of our knowledge) is that we can choose to do so much more.
Unfortunately, we very often choose not to aspire to greatness and live far below our potential.

Purpose is inherent in who you are, your purpose gave birth to you. If you live in high principles, your purpose will come through.
Many people mistaken a goal as their purpose, but a goal is something you achieve, it is not your purpose.

To do good, to be aware, to seek to obtain humility and understanding, and to contribute what we can to making the future better for those who will still live when we are gone.
If we fail in any of those things while we are healthy and capable, then we deviate from our purpose, and perhaps become purposeless.

The beauty of it is that for 24/7/365 the choice is all yours.
Every second of it.
That can be a little daunting, but it's the truth.
