I could never be in a relationship that this question applies.
I am assuming you are not drawing a line here.
I think you should always be able to develop relationships.
What type of relationships is the big question.
You have to have a pretty open relationship to allow for multiple partners but I think there is nothing unusual for you to have close friends and friends and so on with an intimate relationship.
What your question is centered around is the risk involved and I see that as saying one relationship supercedes all others and not just the intimate ones. I worry that what you are being asked to forego is part of who you are.
Do you want to give up your identity for a single relationship?
I can't see people saying sure to that .

My present relationship is far too fragile to risk even thinking of exploring one with a potential!

Well, all things considered... my present relationship is extremely complex and an end doesn't seem to be in sight. However, I would be more than willing to explore one with potential simply because my present relationship lacks the effort of my heart. I'm just wading by, searching for the right moment for it to end.
And my husband refuses to talk to me, lol.

If I were single still, yeah. I just don't think I would like myself very much if I said "I Do" and then added "until" 20 years later. If I were just dating someone and we were pretty much exclusive then "hell yeah" I would check out someone of promising potential! As a single guy it is my responsibility to find someone who is the best she could be. If there is no ring on the finger then I would expect "her" to do the same. Sure if I thought if she was the "one" my heart would break, but, if I truly loved her I would want for "her" happiness, even if that means she would have to choose a different path than mine.

No. I've learned that the grass may look greener but it's usually just as dry as your own grass.
