Because he only wants you when you are done with him. He sucks and you can do better.

Because whatever he's doing is "working for him." In other words, he likes manipulating you into misery and then comes with the sweet stuff so he can start over again. If you like him, keep on seeing him, but you've got to take control over your life. So give him an ultimatum. Treat you with respect and consideration all the time, and if he has a problem with something, tell you about it so you can talk it out rather than "punishing" you with his mean behavior. If he starts the crap up again, say Goodbye and mean it. We don't need turmoil in our lives, especially with those who supposedly love us.

Darling, I've experienced it before. Some guys just love being adored even by his ex. It does wonders to their inflated ego. Once he feels that he is loosing his fan base, he'll try to win you over again. Speaking from experience, you should just forget about him and move on. Don't get yourself stuck in this situation. It's torturing.... Get a life on your own find your own happiness. Don't let other's decide if you should be happy or otherwise. Take control of your own happiness.
All the best!

Because he's a sadistic control freak. If you actually leave him then he can't be mean to you anymore and he'll feel that he's lost some kind of twisted contest. Leave him, chances of him ever changing are about the same as hitting the lottery.

What is there to understand? He treats you like crap because you aren't going anywhere. And, even if you threaten you are, all he has to do is fake being sweet for a day or two and you'll stay. There are tons of men out there who will treat you right, so why do you stay and tolerate it?

I had one of those myself. Mine wasn't exactly mean to me, he just wasn't treating me right. He only wanted me when I said I was done, or I started dating someone else. Do yourself a favor and run now. Don't waste your time like I did. Everyone can make mistakes, but when they keep repeating themselves, it's usually hopeless. Find someone who will treat you right. That's what I'm going to do.

He's a controller and knows that you'll fall for the charm every time. He'll continue to do that as long as you allow him to do so.

You should end it. Anyone who is that unstable isn't fit for a serious relationship.

its called mind games. he's playing games with you, which means he doesn't take your relationship seriously. unless you enjoy being abused, it would be a good idea if you dumped him
