TRIPOLI, Libya (Reuters) -- After agreeing to nuclear cooperation with Libya, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said the West should trust Arab states to develop such technology for peaceful purposes or risk a war of civilizations.
France agreed on Wednesday to help Libya develop a nuclear reactor to supply drinking water from desalinated sea water. The reactor might be supplied by French atomic energy firm Areva.

Sarkozy is a good old conservative: never let principle stand in the way of the almighty dollar (or in his case, the almighty Euro.)

The French love atomic power because they haven't factored in the decommissioning costs that make it by far the most expensive power source in the long run (and not even inc accidents and waste). They will be in this for the cash sale and maintenance of the plant, any fissionable material that does get 'lost' is infinitely more likely to end up in a bomb destined for London or NY than Paris. I'd say twist their arms off politically/economically if they do more than think about it, but then I live near London so I would. The BS about Libya w. 100 years worth of oil needing nuclear now or they might become terrorists is transparent and deceitful.

Hi I am from Libya . With no rivers or fresh water lakes believe me , we need those plants . People have a high incidence of kidney and urinary disease because of the high salt content of tap water . The population live in poverty , only the elite benefit from the oil sales income .
You can rest assured on the security aspect of nuclear technology in this country . They would never use it against the USA or any of it's allies . I can't tell you why and sleep well afterwards .
