Obviously, it doesn't run out and stop on a dime. I'm interested in what happens? How soon do you know you're about to run out of gas, what does it sound like, how quickly does it happen, etc.

You will feel a surging in the engine for a few seconds before you stop completely. rpm will go up and down for no reason; feels like you are pumping the gas pedal up and down wildly;then nothing...... engine dies. No more than 6 - 12 seconds before you feel the surging and engine stops

Your car may sputter or shake, but if it's newer it will just stall, and the steering will lock up (you will have to steer really hard to get it off the road). Make sure you carry an empty gas can so you don't have to buy one at the convenience store, they are expensive. If your gas gauge lies always keep it over a half tank full. Don't ever keep a full gas can in your car all the time, it's dangerous. I've had the running out of gas problem quite frequently in my life, can you tell?

well, you have a gas line from the gas tank and it goes to the gas filter, and then the fuel pump.and the fuel pump will pump it to the injection fuel system. unless it's an old car with a carburetor.. and it goes to that..and the carburetor system ,it had a regulator for not to much pressure to it..and all systems have pressure regulators.and then to the injectors or the carb, where it goes into the intake manifold,or with the electronic system, right to the injector, and then to the top of the piston.. all systems are a little different, but this is a ball-park idea of it..and when the gas tank gets empty, your are pumping all the gas out of the lines, regulators, filters, and injectors,or carb.....and then,no fuel to top of piston, and no power, and then looking for the fillin station, and gas can....

Once you are about to run out of fuel, most cars will have the petrol indicator lights up. When this indicator starts to light, you are good for maybe another 15-25 miles. Normally it doesn't make any other sound. Once you are totally out of gas, your car will starts jerking and then dies off.

Okay, presuming you speak of autos running out of petrol and not humans who cannot provide flatulence or burps ...

Watch the gage on your dashboard carefully. When it gets near the big E, buy more fuel.

Seriously, the vehicle will issue sputter and clang sounds, (Just before it dies and you have to walk two and a half miles to the nearest station). Just hope it's not in the middle of the night with a serial killer on the loose.

In the old days it didn't happen suddenly because of carburated engines. In today's world of fuel injection it actually happens very suddenly. From the moment the car starts hesitating to the moment the car stops may only be a few seconds.

The car will sputter and die very quickly. When all the fuel is gone, well, it's gone. Unless you have a hybrid, it will stop. It happens pretty quickly. It's not like you can hear it sputter and find a station in 5 minutes. You will likely not make it to one.

A very bad idea - and your fuel pump will probably need replacing shortly after doing this a few times.
All the rust and dirt in the tank is getting sucked up.

the car starts surging... kinda like turning on and then off...until it finally dies... just rolls itself to a stop.... you cant really tell when your about to run out of gas other then ur gas gauge or until its starts surging...but once it starts surging... you wont get very far... its bad for the fuel pump by the way...
