That his understanding and experience of study is a hard won right, not of natural right or duty (my duty is my right and my right is my duty), but an opportunity that when and if it expires, shall take man down to the pit of barbarity.

In my understanding, the main point is that learning, and broadening one's horizons should be a joy! A priviledge that is not taken for granted, but celebrated, and then given back to the world. :)
