Boil equal parts of vinegar, lemon juice and powdered litharge for thirty minutes over a slow fire in a porcelain-lined kettle.

This is 3 centuries old and was used extensively by the upper classes in Europe.........and some called Witches, of course.

This query is from a herbal Journal and there is a kicker, but it doesn't change the answer. The page had a much more recent addition written across the discription of the potion. "Poisons DON'T Use."

Terry---I know litharge is lead, but I don't know what it would have been used for in this mixture----I doubt it was injested internally. Now I'm curious, you have to tell me!----I'm adding a guess---hair dye?
