That should be fine, but check your motherboard manual to confirm what kind and size of memory it will support. There shouldn't be any issues with upgrading the hard disk.

I don't know what OS you have on there, but the memory upgrade will very likely help your startup time - 256MB is pushing it for XP and way too low for Vista. In fact, I'd recommend upgrading to 1GB of memory if your system can support it. Also, if your disk drive is nearly full the disk upgrade will also give you a speed boost.

Once you've upgraded your hardware, defragment your hard drive (you can do this now if your disk isn't too full, but if it's got less than around 30% free space it won't work very well).

Check to see if there are any Windows services running that you don't need. Also, run a spyware checker - spyware is one of the leading causes of computer performance problems. And of course run a virus scan too, just in case.

Increasing the amount of disk space will not improve the performance (though defragmenting the disk will).

However, adding RAM will (assuming your motherboard can handle the upgrade).

I would note that most versions of Linux run fine in 256MB so I am assuming that you are running Windows or similar.

You may want to turn off virus checking if your machine is not connected to the Internet. You should also take a look at the graphics configuration - consider using a lower resolution (which requires less RAM), turning off sound, etc.

Or use an O/S which doesn't flagrantly waste RAM.

hi, if you to make your pc run faster, you should add more ram like you want. One more thing for ram, you have to make sure that the slot ram is availible for add more ram. For hard disk, if you have a lot of data, you can add to the one that you want. Otherwise, you just add only 80GB Hard disk only because 160GB hard disk cost more than 80GB hard disk, or you can buy 120GB Hard disk also. You are right, you should stop all the startup program that is not important. You can ask me if you want to know anything else by my email: bonalsam_2006@yahoo.com
