I do not simply want to setup a microphone and record the playing of a cassette, as that would add background noise. Rather, I am curious if there is something that can connect to the PC to save the songs individually.

You should be able to buy a stereo cable with plugs at both ends. You can plug one end of this into your cassette player's headphone socket and the other end into the line in socket on your PC's sound card.

You can use the soundcard line in port, you just need to get the cable that goes from the sound card to the RCA line out jacks from a casette player. There are also several USB products that will take sound and video from a VCR or camcorder and cature it on your PC that would work - they run $50 or so.
