In Native American culture, a dreamcatcher is a handmade object based on a hoop (traditionally of willow), incorporating a loose net, and decorated with items unique to the particular dreamcatcher. There is a traditional belief that a dreamcatcher filters a person's dreams, letting through only the good ones. There are related legends.

Plenty of info at websites below.

I have several, they are round, with feathers around and hanging down. They are supposedly to keep bad dreams away if you put them in the window, the feathers only catch bad dreams and stop them coming in the window. Well that was what I was told. But they are also supposed to be from native American Indians and I was told by a guy who had studied their culture that this isn't true. As I'm here in Australia, maybe an indigenous American could confirm or deny.
