Recently, due to a serious surgery, my doctor decided it'd be best if I stopped having periods for a while, I would of been kool with this if he hadn't decided to give me the depo shot :-(. The first month I've been on it, things were going just fine, i was just normal. But now I'm going onto my 3rd month and I'm beginning to have emotional side effects. I'm having mood swings, and moments when I feel like crying for no reason and worst of all, I have almost NO sex drive at all. I don't feel as interested as I was before and it's almost like the only reason I do anything right now is because he wants to. Is this a normal side effect and has anyone else had this problem???

I had a cyst, about the size of an orange, on one of my ovaries. I didn't find out until after the surgery that it was that large and it had ruptured, so they ended up having to remove the ovary as well.

Yes, I was on it for about a year and I had no sex drive for years afterward. I also gained 20 lbs. on it and I'm still trying to lose it. I didn't experience any emotional side effects, but it doesn't suprise me that you are because it messes with your hormones which have a lot to do with emotions. I'd get off of it if I were you. I'm sure you and your doctor can come up with a better solution. Good luck!

These are all normal side effects of depo....the large doses of hormones can really wreak havoc on your body and emotions. If you are concerned about all of the side effects then you should talk to your doctor about different options. I'm not sure what your surgery was related to but maybe you could go on Seasonale (which would only give you 3-4 periods a year) the hormone dose is much lower which could help improve some of the symptoms you are having. See what your doctor says. Good luck

It is a normal side effect. I had the same problem. As my body got used to it, things changed a little. I didn't have the mood swings as much, but the sex drive never went back to normal until I got off of it. And when you come off that shot, you go through more mood swings again.

It also makes you gain weight like crazy, and diet and exercise don't work as well as it does when you're not on depo.

Check with your doctor to see if there's anything else to do. My doctor actually recommended that I come off depo, which is why I did.

I havent taken the depo-shot, but I have heard of these side-effects. Also, you should be aware that there is a strong link to cevical cancer and the depo-shot. I would hightly way the risks between you continuing this and the reason why you had to take it in the first place. I am sending healthy thoughts your way.

Depo Provera is also an anti depressant which causes the mood swings. Anti depressants also have a problem with causing low or diminished sex drives. Talk to your doctor and explain to him these side effects.

Extremely common side effect. The pill has been documented to cause emotional issue such as anxiety and depression in people who have a tendency to it and the depo and implants are WORSE as they are long term and you can't just stop it.

I have been off the pill for years as 18 months after starting it I started having major anxiety attacks and so I stopped the pill and the anxiety is no where near as bad.

Depo Provera as with any other birth control pills can cause the serious mood swings. Please talk to your doctor about the possiblity of using a different medication, or even getting a second opinion on your situation and ongoing treatment.

those are some of the more serious side affects.. others include weight gain.. honestly you need to let your doctor know right away..

confused for a minute.. and not to pry.. did your surgery have anything to do with your abdomen? only reason i ask is that unless it has to do with your 'girlie parts' why would your doctor decide to stop your period.. using depo is a serious commitment and affects chemicals and hormones in your body..
kinda surprised his first choice wasnt one of the new pill contraceptives.. way easier to control and easier to stop if you have side affects..

Since you don't mention the serious surgery,It's hard to tell. But just having an invasive surgery is enought to set you into depression, let alone what your hormones could be doing to your body. I think I would call the DR.s office and talk to him. It's possible there is something else going on from the surgery, causing this..
