Actually in the early part of this country there was only one political party and that was the Democratic-Republicans. The Whigs didn't show up until Jackson and the Republican party was formed in 1854 as a progressive party.

Do you mean the expansion you libs have criticized and demeaned as western imperialism, you so despise? I think they were neither Republicans nor Democrats. Just people looking for a better and free life without tyranny.

Let me get this straight..............liberals accuse republicans of an unjust war by INVADING IRAQ, yet you believe that if republicans were running the 13 colonies that they wouldn't have INVADED the rest of North America? C'mon. If you want to make fun of republicans then go ahead. But don't call them war mongers one day, and then claim they'd be too afraid for westward expansion the next!

Given the fact that most US western states (west of the Mississippi) are Red, as their ancestors were, I'd say most of the American settlers who settled the western US were Republicans.

I don't think that's fair. Our founding fathers would be considered traditional Republicans.
It's the neocons who use FEAR as a tool of choice.

And the "War on terror is just a bumper sticker" stance is so much better.
edit: If the colonies had been like the liberals of today they'd be yelling "No War for Tea! No War for Tea"!

They are not afraid themselves -- they use fear as a tool to achieve their political agendas.
THEY (for purposes of this answer) = "current Republican party leadership", not the entire Republican party as a whole.
