CIBC in Ontario Canada yesterday released a report stating that when Ontario shuts down it's coal fired hydro plants in 2009, the average hydro bill will increase 70%. This is due to the fact that Ontario is not constructing any new generating facilities.

Is this what we have to look forward too? Environmentalists are against Nuclear power, garbage incineration and the coal plants, so what are we supposed to do?
A 70% increase would devastate my family as I'm sure it would many others and only increase the gap between the rich and the poor that Liberals are always screaming about. Thanks Al Gore! Enjoy your private Jet.

Sorry Eve,

The CIBC is an independent financial institution not the power company so it has nothing to do with oil.

Solar power means you have no hydro bill? Actually, even with solar panels in Canada you still have to have hydro lines to your house and wiring in your house for which the power companies charge you "delivery" fees so it most certainly not free.

Property taxes exist whether you have running water, sewers or not. Even those in rural Canada who are on a septic system and a well pay plenty in property taxes. That is the only source of income for municiplities.

Due to the high price of hybrid cars it would take a person 10 to 12 years to recover their gas savings by which time you would usually be due to replace you car.

You're the one who needs to do your homework "chickadee".

Sorry Sageandscholar,

Where does it say I blame Liberals? I said it would increase the gap between the rich and the poor that liberals complain about.

Al Gore buys carbon offsets from Generation Investment Management, a company he owns.

Sorry coragryph,

Yes Al Gore is the messenger so it's only natural to point the finger at him, he IS global warming. As far as solutions go, there are solutions, however solutions take time and we need to work together to make those changes happen, not buy into this silly Kyoto protocol which will turn Canada and the USA into third world countries while China gets filthy rich building hundreds of coal burning plants. However you know me so well that you know I don't do anything, I just spend all my time complaining. Here's an idea to help, you've answered more than 13,000 questions, why don't YOU give the environment a break and shut your computer down once in a while.

To The Man In The Box,

Drinkable water, healthy sources of food, and sustainable resources and raw materials all cost money. What do you think is going to happen to the cost of food and water if electrcity prices go up by 70%. Do you think those grocery stores and farms are just going to absorb those costs and make less money? No, they are going to pass those costs on to you.

My God, are you all you people so filthy rich that you don't see that this would devastate all those poor people you claim to give a s**t about?

There is one phrase that most liberals don't seem to understand. In fact, I would go so far as to call it an "inconvenient truth".

It is the term called "unintentional consequences."

Liberals fail to grasp that by legislating something to improve the lives of one group, you in turn are harming another. You ban CF C's? Arguably a great move for the environment, yet Thousands die in third world countries because they ate spoiled food, as they lost their cheap source of refrigerants. Ban DDT? Another victory for eco-freaks, yet, now Malaria is again a leading world-wide killer.

Until we have clear, concise, accurate facts that outline:
a) our role in the warming process
b) possible solutions, if in fact the problem is of our doing
c) the cost of each solution
d) the various consequences that could arise from each solution

Then I am and will be against silly environmental extremists forcing their message of fear and despair down my throat, while at the same time stealing money from my pocket to pay for legislation based on consensus, politics, or Al Gore.

Great question, and great responses to these cheap attempts to support the fear mongering of Al Gore.

Environmentalists are not against nuclear power, when it is built in certain areas and especially when the waste is treated and recyclled instead of being dumped in the ocean or on foreign soil. Now my question is: a hydro plant is a plant that generate power from water force ... What does the coal have to do with it?

Dont be an idiot...these are all scare tactics to keep you using oil...they don't want you finding alternatives...there is no money in alternatives.

Did you know that if you had a solar powered house you would have virtually no expenses at all? No hydro, no gas, nada. Not even property taxes unless you wanted running water and sewers.

And with a hybrid car or alternately fueled vehicle hardly a cent for transportation either.

Do your homework chickadee.

These guys just want to gouge more money from you...that's all...they make a very nice hefty profit right now as it is. Time to tax the big spenders...the corporations and morons who keep half the city lit up for no reason at all.

Yeah!! Because, as we all know, that extra money you'd have to spend is so much more important than a healthy planet! I mean, who needs clean air, drinkable water, healthy sources of food, and sustainable resources and raw materials when you've got tons of colored, government-issue paper with numbers printed on it?!?

What you should be complaining about is the fact that (according to you) your government isn't investing in clean, renewable energy production methods, such as wind, solar, geothermal, and hydroelectric, to replace the pollution factories that they are wisely shutting down.

Al Gore is not the leader of your govt, and not the one passing the laws.

If you want to blame Gore for pointing out that we're causing massive damage to our atmosphere... go ahead. It's shooting the messenger because you don't like the message.

Your govt made the decision to close the plant. Blame them for that if you need someone to blame.

Or you could do something truly radical and work to find a solution to the problem, rather than putting all your effort into blaming people....

Blaming liberals for wanting to fix the mess we are in is really very ignorant.
Ranting on about private jets when it is well known he travels by public transport whenever possible and purchases carbon offsets when he cannot is equally so.
Why not blame the continued lack of investment in alternative sources (yes they do exist, do work and can be sustainable) by corporations and the lack of incentives given by our governments to do so?
Gore is not your enemy - those who refuse to take this issue seriously are.

Hahahahahahaha. Yes, verrrrrry true. Did you know that Nancy Pelosi takes her own private jet back and forth to California and Wahington every week? refusing to use civilian trasport?
Filthy hypocrites. Talking about saving our planet and then driving home in enormous H3's.

And by the way coragryph: your opinions disgust me. you really shouldn't talk about abortion untill you're the one getting pregnant.

You can always burn wood to heat your house in the winter and install solar panels to generate electricity. Don't blame the government because you are too reliant on others to produce your energy for you.
