It sounds so quaint, now, but when I was a kid, the theme of a birthday party was...birthday! And it worked!
My mom had seven kids. Our annual birthday party was a simple get-together in the evening (after work) with grandparents and godparents (and any cousins/children who came with those). A birthday cake, some pop, some simple presents--voila! Party!
On our tenth birthday, and only our tenth birthday, we got to have a party with our friends invited. This took place on a Saturday, and the dining room was decorated with crepe paper, etc. We had Sloppy Joes or something simple for lunch, and the cake was a little bigger and there were more presents. We had a few kiddie games. After a couple-three hours, the parents came and took their kids home.
It was a special, special party because it was the only one we had like it. We appreciated it a lot.
So my suggestion would be: If you want a party every year for your kids, yes, stick with having the three-in-one. YOU decide what the theme is, or isn't. Hang a pinata from a tree, make some Sloppy Joes, get a nice ice cream cake, then let them go in the back yard and dream up their own entertainment. Kids are good at this. (Just make sure nobody's beating anybody else up.) Make sure the parents know, party's over at 4 p.m., come 'n get 'em.

I know exactly what you are talking about. My sister has a 2, 5 and 9 year old who's bdays are two and three weeks apart. She is going to have just one big theme in her own back yard. Picking a theme though will be hard considering you have three kids who already like certain things. Spiderman, blues clues, pooh bear. So many things children like. Since you have two boys and one girl, you could always let the boys have a theme and the girl have her own theme. But, on the other hand, that will cost. My sister is doing the traditional Happy Birthday cake with their names on it and the traditional decoration fit for 2, 5 and 9 year olds. It doesn't cost that much to stay traditional and kids really don't think about a theme. They are too interested in opening presents and eating cake with ice cream. I told my sister to make things easy to do by getting a pinyatah. Ya know? Those things that have the candy in them? lol. I might not be all that help, but with three kids, money can be an issue and a theme is deffinately an issue. Just keep it traditional. It makes things easier on you and will give the kids a fun birthday. Good luck!

MAke the theme a swim party. AND get bounceables of fish, alligators and other stuff ahve water guns and make sure they play away from the food and cakes. ALso have water slides on the ground and if you have sprinklers turn them on too. ANd ahve the parents who stay there wear short with swim suits underneath so they won't ruin good clothes and enjoy.

Do you have a Slip - N - Slide? Hook it up to your garden hose and it's like a mini water park in your back yard.
