Our schools have been dumbed down to educate the masses.

I commend you on a great observation on your part. I believe it's true, what the sociologists claim - that Americans are dumbing down. Americans now don't have the verbal skills or the vocabulary of the past generations. Most are unable to express a singular thought, and generalize instead with an over-used and accepted crutch word to symbolize acceptance or discontent. To be specific about a subject requires a good vocabulary, and the thought process to articulate that vocabulary. I really don't know what has changed or why.

For me it's easier to write/type my feelings and opinions. There are times when I can verbally express okay, but most of the time the words are right there in my head, but when I start to communicate them they don't come out right. They either come out backwards or just mixed up and when that happens I get flustered and my voice quivers as if I'm going to cry. I don't cry. That just happens. I have a good vocabulary. At least I've been told that.

It could be for some people a lack of confidence. I know that's true for myself. As far as the ability to speak, that is.

I'm actually one of those. I can express myself much better in writing/typing. I'm just very shy so I don't like to express myself verbally, most of the time concerned about possibly facing confrontation face to face with someone right at the moment

The fear of ridicule and humiliation I believe. None of us want to come across as ignorant. My problem is trying to sum up in a few words what I want to say to someone without upsetting them or sounding ignorant. Most people, too, have a horrible habit of interrupting before you're finished, thus stopping me from engaging them in conversation more regularly.

Sometimes it is hard to put into words what you feel. We often open mouth insert foot. Also, not everyone sees things in the same way and so it is hard to correctly relay correctly by verbal communication.

when you express yourself in writing, you have plenty of time to stop and think - come up with better wording, rephrase, delete; whereas, verbally, you just blurt out what comes to mind without much thinking..
