I believe that when good things happen to you, your friends share in your good fortune. Just like when something happens to one of your friends, you feel happy for them, you get to experience it with them even if it is from a far. If you don't have friends and loved ones to share your good fortunes with, then what good is prosperity in your life? But I also feel that when your going through adversity in life, your friends play a more important role. Having someone to turn to during hard times in your life is so important in overcoming adversity. So I think friends are important no matter where you are in life!

I don't really think this is disputable. Whether we're cynics or optimists or whatever, we can't deny the fact that only true friendship would survive in adversity. Only...cynics will know few friends in times of prosperity, and almost none in times of adversity. Optimists will know many friends in times of prosperity and possibly become disillusioned in times of adversity. Depending on the person's willingness to trust in others, the number of friends will be different, but the statement will be true no matter what.

Well, true friends will help keep your feet on the ground in prosperity, and keep your spirits up in adversity with a helping hand. But when fortune smiles friends can be two a penny, and as easily spent. And, as the old jazz song of Bessie Smith goes "Nobody knows you when you're down and out". She got it right - feted publicly wherever she sang; but bled to death after a car accident because the all-white hospitals wouldn't admit her.

Hi,
A real friend looks at the heart, not just the packaging. Real friendship isn’t just for what it can get in return. Friendship multiplies the joy you feel in times of prosperity and halves (or at least helps dilute) the pain in times of adversity. What happiness is there in prosperity if there is no-one to share it with? We need friends as much in prosperity as we do in adversity.

No. And the sad truth is that you will be more apt to have "fair weather friends" in prosperity. On the other hand, true friends will stick by you in adversity.

The question is: what defines prosperity? What defines adversity? Of what is the essence of these things made? If Prosperity is defined as health; then there is one answer. But if it is define as material gain, then there is another answer. The same with adversity.

Certainly not.
In times of prosperity, friends are niceties.
In times of adversity, friends are necessities.
We all know the phrase, "I could really use a friend about now." means you are in trouble.

It varies. But usually we need our most honest friends in prosperity and our most loyal in adversity.
