The best helmet is a DOT approved helmet that is properly fitted. The different companies use different models for the shape of a head. A well made but poorly fitting helmet is not much use.

One that fits you, and offers the features you need.

Look for DOT and/or Snell certification. There has been some controversy recently over whether Snell tests helmets in a way that's consistent with the real world. (Look up motorcyclist magazine's online site, and search on "Blowing the Lid Off" for a very, very thorough discussion of helmet standards).

The best helmet is one that you'll wear. If it takes a flash paint job for you to wear it, spend your money on that. If it takes the maximum possible amount of ventilation, spend it there. If it takes the lightest possible helmet for you to wear it, then get that one.

Once you figure out what's important to you, do your shopping. Be aware that a $100 helmet CAN be a real value. If you're happy with the features, and it's properly certified, then there's no reason not to buy it.

Fit is also very important, and very personal. Not only do you have different sizes to worry about, there are different shapes of helmet, too. Try your helmet on. Leave it on for 15-30 minutes. Yeah, you may look like a goober walking around a motorcycle store with a helmet on, but it's a lot better than dropping $500 on a helmet that gives you a headache after 30 minutes.

I chose best price. HJC.
I think it was $65.00.

It's my head, and I don't even have to wear the darn thing.
