I think that you should let your 10 year old kid get a cell phone, but do not make him share it. Cell phone's come in handy at fairs and afterschool, let's say you r goning to be late to pick him up you can call him to tell him that so he will not worry. Sol get you're kid a cell phone but since he is only 10 give him a cheap cell phone

I'm not a parent but I have lots of nieces and nephews so I qualify to answer.
I'd say 10 is a young age to have a cell phone because of their maturity at that age. However...
It depends on your child's maturity level. I have a 10 year old nephew and he doesn't have a cell phone because he doesn't need one. But he is definitely capable of handling one properly.
If you feel it would be beneficial for your 10 year old to have a cell phone, you could try a trac phone, which is a cheaper and safer alternative.
Ultimately, it's your decision.

I let my son have a prepaid cell phone when he was 10. With him running around the neighborhood with his friends I wanted a way to contact him. I trusted him with it, but his friends didn't understand the meaning of calling the home phone first. He would use so many minutes that I finally pulled the plug on it.

I would allow the child to have a basic $20 flip phone for emergencies if they were taking the school bus or something else like that. They would not be able to text friends or anything like that, just call in case of emergency.

If my child had to walk by himself/herself to school and back, then YES. My son was once jumped by 14 kids coming home from school. If he had a cell phone, he may have avoided that situation and call for help.

Nope....my daughter is 12 and she had been bugging me for a cell phone because her friends have one and I still wont let her have one. Why does she need one? She was also asking me at 10. I have always told her that when she can pay for it herself then she can get one. I have enough problems paying my own bills, I don't need to add another senseless bill ontop of them.

No. I say if you can't keep track of a 10 year old without a cell phone then you're screwed!

No.
If they spent a lot of time doing afterschool activities, or whatever, then maybe...but only if it was a prepaid one. Like virgin mobile where you can add $20 every now and then. That way its really only for emergencies and you know how much they're talking!

I know of parents who let their kids around that age have one, but the only number it can call is the parent.

God no! Kids today are spoiled enough as it is! For example, today at work, one of my co-worker's family came in so he could go to lunch with them and celebrate one of his daughter's 5th birthday. I've never wanted to slap anyone as hard as I wanted to slap my co-worker when our boss came up and asked his daughter what she got for her birthday and she held up an iPod Shuffle. WTF is a five year old going to do with an iPod Shuffle?!? Put "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" on it?!? Hell, I'm 21 and I consider myself lucky to have a freakin' cell phone! And people wonder why kids today are such disrespectful spoiled rotten brats!
