Yes you can. It is not advised. But, it is possible. They will just call your baby...baby girl or boy ___________(with your last name)

I know two people who have done it. One of them, the parents could not agree. The other could not decided (they had 10 other kids)

Sure you can.

Like many people have said, it's easier if you don't. And the Vital Records people will call and call you because they want to file the paperwork for the birth certificate and the social security number. But you absolutely can leave without naming your baby.

My husband and I talked and talked and talked about names through both pregnancies. But we deliberately didn't know if we were having boys or girls, and we wanted to wait and see what they looked like or seemed like before we named them.

The birth of our first daughter was long, drawn-out, and traumatic, ending in a lot of fetal and maternal distress and an emergency C-section. I was kind of out of it for a while, and so was the baby, and it was hard to decide what to call her. We ended up naming her as the absolute last thing we did before leaving the hospital. I mean, she was dressed, strapped into her car seat, I had discharge orders and meds...the whole deal. And the Vital Records people called while we were walking out the door, and we took a deep breath and just gave her a name.

Second baby we had fewer excuses, but still no name. We just couldn't agree about what she looked like or what we liked for her. She was six days old and had been home for a whole weekend before we named her.

No big deal.

I asked about that because I didnt know what I wanted to name my baby but they said if I left without a name for her then i would have to go to the county office and order a birth certificate but i wouldnt wait until you left because it is just easier to get it over with. It also depends on where you live. I did name her in the hospital though.

Yes, you can. The hospital will probably try to tell you otherwise because it makes THEIR job a little more difficult. However, it is not illegal.

The law will vary by state, but there is a time frame for filing the birth certificate (in my state, a year). However, even if you are past that time frame they have to issue one if you have proof of a birth. There is no time frame on filing for a social security number (it is actually NOT legally required), but without one you will have a lot of difficulties filing taxes, etc.

But yes, you CAN leave the hospital without naming your baby. Most people, however, have already chosen a name prior to the birth or decide on one before they leave-it does make things simpler.

Well, I'm really not sure whats the current law on this. Definetly need your last name or wife/partners last name in order to leave the hospital. For the 1st/2nd name you have up to a week after you leave the hospital to make up mind.

When we had our son they told us that we could leave the hospital without naming him but it would cost more because you have to pay a hefty fee to get the birth certificate changed. Call your hospital and see what they say, just in case it's different where you are at.

Yes. They just put down the name "Baby" as the first name to go with your last name. They expect that someday you will pick a name and get into the records.

Not sure, but I know they want to get the baby name on the birth certificate. You had nine months, you couldn't agree or think of a name in all that time, that you would actually leave the hospital without naming your Baby.

Yes. Think about it this way, some people have home births don't they? And they name their babies. The hospital just gives you the paperwork. You don't have to finish it while you're there.
