I found a reasonable solution in a shopvac with a large hose. My dogs' hair stopped up every standard sized hose and filled up fancy vacs quickly, So i got a fairly large Wet/Dry shop vac for about $39 and it's easy to empty. Bags aren't required.
I also use a Roomba Robot Vacuum for pets for in between jobs. I can actually just go around the edges with the big machine and let the Roomba do the rest. The standard Roomba is not so good for pet hair, and it really works better on hard floors. For the carpets, find a rolling attachment to go on the ShopVac.

I love Mr. Dyson's wonderful invention. I have often up 4 to 6 long haired dogs in my house plus 3 1/2 cats at a time. I used to own a Miele but the bags are 3.00$ a pop. and I can fill a bag very day. The Dyson is the only way to go. I do have 2 filters for so that I never have to wait for one to dry before I can vacuum again. This is the most versatile vacuum on the market.

Oh my, I have to tell you about my Dyson!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I LOVE my dyson!! There are different types of Dyson vacuums, if you are looking for one that will lift pet hair, then you will need to look at the Animal Dyson's. They are designed for lifting pet hair.
I have the Purple Dyson Animal. I can not say enough great things about it! It has been incredible! The filter has not yet clogged and I have had it for almost 2 years and I vacuum at least once a day with 2 dogs and a child and a husband in my home. It has lost absolutely no suction, no matter how much I use it! It has so many great features and it is worth every single penny we spent on it! So easy to use, I actually find it fun to vacuum now!
Go to a store like sears, they will let you try out the various Dyson models right there. I can just about guarantee you will love it too!

Your problem is that your vacuum is a light weight which is only good for quick little pick ups. Finding the right vacuum is always an on going challenge but if you are willing to bump up your price then a Dyson or Miele will probably more than take care of your issues. It's an investment but worth the results.

All vacuums will work fine until the filter clogs--so that means the bag is not on right--no way the hair should be getting out of the bag--is the bag ripped?? Check it out. The air is pulled through the sealed body and out the filter --that is what causes suction through the bag--so a leaky bag or one that does not attach properly is allowing hair to get on the filter and clog it.... even an expensive vacuum will clog with a bad bag. YOU ARE USING THOSE PAPER BAGS___RIGHT??

I've got a Dyson, with a canister instead of a bag. It's incredible! I love it! I have hardwood/carpet mix and it does a wonderful job.
