The guy saves a ship from blowing up so he would never mee tthe people who sent him back? So that means he never went back so how is he there!? Weird

Of course that is all bull which I believe got started with H.G Wells, the 18th century British historian and science fiction writer. (He is the one who wrote War of the Worlds which has been scaring the poo out of people ever since.)
So supposing you could indeed go back in time, which is still a fun thing to contemplate. But how could you go back beyond the moment of your conception ?
Shucks, that takes all the fun out of it.

the whole reason he went back was because the ship blew up which led him to contact those people with that machine. So when he went back and stopped the ship from blowing up the version of him that went back didn't exist and only the version of him that met that girl for the "first" time at the end of the movie was left
