When my baby was a newborn she would nurse for an hour everytime, especially at night. Gradually she became a better more efficient nurser, and the time decreased to 40 minutes, then 20 minutes, and now at 7months she sometimes only nurses for five minutes.
Let her nurse for a long as she wants. She knows what she's doing. Let her nurse on the first breast for as long as you hear her swallowing. When swallowing slows down, start doing breast compressions, so that she gets as much of the hindmilk as possible. When she's done the first breast offer the second. Always offer the second and let her decide if she's still hungry.
Breast compressions are really good for increasing hindmilk consumption. There's an article on that below, check it out if you want.

Well I never actually timed how long my kids nursed for.
I just let them drink their fill on one breast and if the wanted more then I'd stick them on the other.
I think its just so much easier to offer one breast first, if they get full then feed from the other breast next time, usually not that long to wait anyway. But if they have completely emptied the first breast and are still hungry then offer the other breast.
That way you know each breast is being emptied and baby is getting all he needs.
The amount of time they need each session is different depending on how hungry they are, if they are going through a growth spurt, whether they just want comfort etc.
So some feedings will go for 5 mins and some for 30 min and some even for an hour. And it does feel like they are constantly feeding but this is very normal.
Just keep doing what you are doing. Feed on demand and everything should be fine.

I have been told about 10 minutes on each breast. I don't switch breasts in the middle of the feeding- I let her nurse on one side for one feeding and then the other for the next feeding unless she fusses.
It is common for baby's to want to nurse a lot in the early weeks- A LOT! So...get ready for it and wait until he is sleeping to work on other stuff.
You DON'T HAVE TO STOP NURSING AT 1 YEARS OLD. Sorry, that bugs me when people announce that who have probably never, ever nursed before. I am on 11 months and plan to go until she is 18 months and then slowly start to wean her unless she wants to do it herself first.
Good job for breastfeeding. Remember that if you have never done it before- the early weeks are trying- so stick with it.
EDIT: Good job waiting for the first side- if you continue then I am sure he is getting the hindmilk. Keep up the good work momma! ;-)

It depends, sometimes 10 or 15 min and sometimes more like 45. With my first baby, he nursed a long time until he was a couple months old. With #2 & #3, they nursed faster or my milk was just more abundant.

I remember in the beginning it took 30 minutes or more to breastfeed my daughter. But I think the good stuff comes after just a few minutes. I never focused that much on it and breastfed until my daughter was 15 months and she was healthy and full. Good luck!

I believe about 15minutes. I could not always get mine to nurse that long though especially in the beginning.

10 minutes on each side should take care of all the milk on that side. Then offer the other side for 10 minutes or until full.

I have always heard that you should stop breastfeeding at least by their first birthday. I have also heard some mothers say that it's fine to once they start solid foods, too.
