My doctor who did my pap today (6 weeks pregnant) said she wasnt going to do the ultra sound this time cause she didn't think we'd see anything but a sac.
Is this normal? She said next time.. so will I be able to see anything or hear anything at 10 weeks?

Typically, they don't do an ultrasound until 20 weeks, as they are able to tell the sex at that point. They will do another one again at 30 weeks. You will, however more than likely be able to hear the heartbeat the next time you go :)

I had an ultrasound at 6 weeks, at 8 weeks, and at 10 weeks (due to a prior miscarriage).

At my 6 week appointment we saw an empty sac, and my heart broke. I had seen many women posting they had seen their babies and heartbeats by that point.

At my 8 week appointment, we saw an embryo that was exactly the size it should be at 8 weeks, and a good strong heartbeat.

Given the choice, I will never again do an ultrasound before 8 weeks. I know you were hoping for an ultrasound, and I understand.

At 10 weeks, the baby looked great and they were able to see and hear the heartbeat (but that was early to hear the hearbeat, even my doctor was surprised).

Best of luck to you

I was told that if you are not considered "at risk," they normally only conduct one ultrasound, and it is in the second trimester, 16-17 weeks. This will probably differ between doctors, though. I just had an ultrasound this week to determine the age of the fetus, and all I could see was the gestational sack. It looks like a black blob... They think I am less than 6 weeks pregnant.

It is normal for your first ultrasound to be done between 10-13 weeks. However some women do have them done earlier, but usually to get a due date if there periods are off cycle.. I had one done at 6 weeks and athough you could see the sac. That was all you could see.. At 10 weeks however I had another one done and was able to see the little peanut and hear his heartbeat..

By 8 weeks, and especially 10 weeks, you can see the baby (looks like a peanut) and you can see the heart beating. You might not be able to hear anything because the heartbeat isn't loud enough yet.

It may be normal for your doctor.

My doctor always did ultrasounds that early and if he only saw a sac, he'd have me come back in about a week. He liked to make sure the baby was in the uterus and he liked to see the heartbeat on the screen and take a CRL measurement early on.

But don't worry if yours doesn't. I'm sure there isn't a 'universal' policy on this type of thing. It also may depend on your insurance.

With my first pregnancy I only got one ultrasound and that was at 18 wks when I found out the sex. This pregnancy they did one at 10wks and I saw a small peanut looking object (which was the baby) and you could see the heart flashing (beating). I didn't hear anything. They didn't listen to the heartbeat until the next visit.

The doctor is there to serve you because, after all, you are paying them a lot of $$. If you have cause to worry about the health of your baby, bring it up to her. Demand an ultrasound!

Usually though, 6 weeks is really early to do one. 8 weeks is the earliest, unless they suspect something is wrong w/ the fetus, then they would schedule you for one.

Whatever has you worried or concerned, just ask the doctor about it. They are there to help ease the worry, not add to it!

Totally normal. They usually do one later on in pregnancy when they can see more of what's going on. It costs the hospital and insurance a lot of money so they normally do only one - unless there are problems. Don't worry, it's totally normal. Good luck and I hope you have a healthy great pregnancy!!! And baby!!!
