My daughter will be studying WWII as a fifth grader this year. At the end of last year, the teacher reccomended reading a few WWII books overthe summer. Well we did not do it. I was wondering ifthere are any good historical or hisorical fiction movies that she could watch, just so that she couldat least develop a little bit of interest in WWII before the summer is over.

'The Great Escape", "The Guns of Naverone","The Dirty Dozen", "Patton", "The Bridge On the River Kwai", "Midway', 'In Harm's Way", "From H ere to Eternity", "Run Silent, Run Deep". "Saving Private Ryan", "Band of Brothers", "Tora, Tora, Tora, " "A Bridge Too Far".

These are only a few of the movies that are out in which your daughter might watch however, some of them are pretty old. If you are interested in her getting some specifics, you might try allowing her to watch documentaries. I use them in my class with my 8th graders. The DOC's will contain more truthful information., for example "Tuskegee Airmen", "Pearl Harbor".

Finally, let me offer this small piece of advise -movies and documentaries are good - but if your daughter's teacher asked her to 'read' , then reading is what she should be doing. I try to offer video viewing to my classes AFTER they have read and only portions so that they can learn to COMPARE AND CONTRAST. Our kids see too much t.v. and don't like to read. I'm not saying this is true for your daughter but you did admit that the "teacher recommended reading" for the summer and you guys didn' t do it.

Reading will help your 5th grader learn to develop more of an imagination (creative) for herself. A video or movie is going to deny that in her. Reading is so important. You should read the stats about students and their reading scores. It's bad in many places. I encourage you to get her a book on her reading level and allow her to read - then show her the movie. Some movies will be so graphic, that it might be too harsh.

I love children and I really want them all to be excited about reading. I believe a good reader will become a better writer and a better writer will become a great speaker!

There are lots ofs films about the World War 2. There was a film made aboutthe of Anne Frank which would suit your daughter the best. The teacher must really be into the war to expect fith graders to watch movies and read books..There was a film made called The Great Escape. Check your local video stores or your library. The teacher should have recommended suitable films for their age.
