i have a friend who is married to a cop. Her Uncle passed away on Monday and Tuesday he left telling her he wanted a divorce. What a nut. But, I want to help her so much and have never dealt with this before with any of my friends. I don't want to over do my support and sound like a complete nut either. But what can I do to make her feel better without sounding too sappy and too overdone?

You can't completely take away all the hurt your friend is feeling right now. It would be impossible. However, the gentle show of friendship through a phone call, card, email or visit is the best medicine you could offer to her right now. Invite her to have coffee with you. If she wants to share her thoughts, she will. Otherwise, just being present can often help a great deal.

Be a good listener. Most of the time when I have a major problem all I want to do is to be able to vent with out some one telling me whats right or wrong. So my advice for you is to just listen without judgement and if your friend asks for your advice give it but only when you are asked.

Just listen when she is ready to talk. Sometimes people need to vent and sometimes they need to be alone while processes something huge like this. Take your cue from her. You could send her a card saying that you know she is going thru a difficult time and you want her to know that you are there for her, whatever it is she may need. Help with the kids if there are any and try to stay neutral.

He's an insensitive turd to give her this news after her uncles passing.

Just tell her that you're there for her whenever she wants to talk or just to keep company ....then make sure you are, she's going to have it tough for a while

Tell your friend that you are sorry for all the bad news that has been bestowed upon her. And that you are there as a friend for her at anytime.
