If you are planning to become a teacher and you want to have a degree in Social Studies, your courses will vary from Old World History, American History, African, etc. You will probably also take Sociology courses and some Philosophy. The majority of your courses will be Education - Methods, etc. how to 'teach'. Depending upon where you are from, you will be expected to take a test (Praxis) which is to test you in the area of your concentration. When I was in school, I majored in Social Work. They dropped the program and I flipped over to Sociology. Added English, Psychology, Philosophy and had a multitude of credits. When I moved to Tennessee , I was completely certified to teach - English/Language, Reading, Social Studies, for grades - 7-12. You don't need anything else. Good luck - I encourage all persons who wish to become teachers. Teachers are so needed and I respect anyone who reaches for this golden ring - you are called to this position.

A bachelor's degree is required at a minimum and most states are now requiring master's degrees.

You will find educational certification requirements for all states, including the degree required, at this site:

Any college you are considering attending will be able to tell you exactly what courses you need to take in addition to your major for educational certification in your state.
