I was very excited that my husband would have to be changing the litter but that didn't work out too well. I now use the heavy cleaning gloves and keep my head far away when I scoop. I wash the gloves and my hands after scooping. It is best to try to have someone else do it. However, if you have been around cat's all your life and if they are indoor cats then you might be immune to it already. Try to get someone else to be safe but if that doesn't work, like with me, use gloves, and maybe a mask too. Good luck and congrats on your pregnancy!!!

um... toxoplasmosis I think is the disease... it comes from getting the cat feces on you. I used to be really cautious how I handled the litter box when I dumped it. I got cat scratch disease instead when the kit scratched me and bit me.

Actually there's a really easy way to be safe. Get a package of inexpensive plastic gloves like they use in medical offices. I think you can get them from pharmacies. They sell them now at paint stores in small batches. You can get them from medical supply houses for sure.

If you can dump the litterbox one handed without getting any on you, you can get away using one glove, but if you're unsure about your success one-handed, then wear two of the gloves when you handle the litter box.

You might be perfectly safe without the gloves, but they will give you FULL protection and then you won't have to worry.

It's surely safe to be around your cats when pregnant.
The only risk is getting toxoplasmosis from touching the feces as you handle the litterbox, and so it would be a good safeguard to use the plastic gloves to be 100% safe.

Of course, if you have another family member who can take care of the litter box, then you don't have to worry about using gloves.

That's a really good question.

I don't have that worry as my cats are outside only barn cats and I don't have to use litter boxes.

You can be around your cats but try to get someone else to change the litter. If that isn't possible then wear gloves and wash your hands good.

It's totally fine to be around your cats. Just make sure someone else deals with the litter box. You can not even scoop it out.

Studies have shown that children who grow up with pets often have fewer allergies.

You can be around cats, just not the litter boxes. Have someone else deal w/ the pooper scooper while you're pregnant!
