I actually would recommend against an ultrasound at 6 weeks after my experience this time around. I had an ultrasound at 6 weeks and they didn't find a baby. An ultrasound 2 weeks and a lot of stress later and they found a healthy baby with a good heartbeat.
That was a lot of worry that could have been avoided by just waiting until we could be more sure of seeing something.

Every doctor is different...some give first ultrasounds around 10wks to see the heart beat..some don't...i didn't w/first and did w/this one. Usually around 13wks on everytime you go they will ask how you are feeling and listen to the heartbeat. Around 16-20wks some later...they do the ultrasound to measure the baby and make sure everything is good and also if they can tell and you want to know they will find the sex of the baby. Later in the 20something weeks early 30's they will do the gestational diabetes testing. To figure out what they may do throughout pregnancy you can go to babycenter.com and sign up (IT'S FREE), and it will email you every day that you turn a week and let you know how big your baby is, what you may feel and sometimes what you will experience at the doctors. Plus you can chat for free w/other mothers and pregnant ladies and get advice and let go.
Congrats on being pregnant and good luck!

During my first pregnancy, they did the ultrasound at my first visit. However the other time they waited for me to be around 9 weeks.
The reason being unless you have a health complication, any special symptoms (where the doctors need to be concerned) it is just a big time consuming thing to find the tiny baby in your womb and definately hard to get to the heartbeat.
Around 9 weeks, the heartbeat is strong enough to hear and the baby is a decent size too. The ultrasounds are so much clearer now, you can see a sizeable shape of the body and not just a blob like earlier.
Relax, take care of yourself and be excited about your first ultrasound! Good luck.

Unless there is reason to believe that your LMP isn't accurate (irregular periods), most doctors do not do an early ultrasound. There is no need. Most first appointments locally are between 10-12 weeks unless you are high risk due to age or other medical problem. Miscarriages are so common that there really isn't much more that he can do yet. My guess is that much of what you are expecting will occur at the next appointment.
If you've had prior uterine infections, on the other hand, you really want an ultrasound to be sure that you do not have an ectopic pregnancy. That is usually the primary cause of that.

Some doctors do not do an ultrasound at the very beginning. My doctor does the first ultrasound at 18-20 weeks, and the second at 28-30 weeks. Any other ultrasounds are done only as needed for complications.

Yep. My doctor won't see a pregnant woman until she's 8 weeks along and then she'll do an ultrasound so you can see the heart beating. At six weeks, I'm not sure if you can see it or not. The appointments will get a little more exciting later on. Congrats!

All of my doctors wouldn't even make an appointment for me before 8 even 12 weeks! Not much happens in the beginning. It's the end when you are there all the time.

at 6 weeks there is almost nothing to see, many mothers are disappointed or worried by a 5-6 week ultrasound. He will do one at the next check-up, at 10 weeks or so the baby is very clearly formed and you can see the heartbeat and movement.

That's all I had done with my first appt. Oh, except they ordered blood work too. But as long as everything is going smoothly, the first ultrasound isn't usually until around twenty weeks or so. Congrats!
