Ok, my friend is having a really big sweet sixteen later this summer. However, over the summer I always go on vacation with my family down south, and this time I'm going to be on vacation the same time her party is going to be.
Note: My friend has been planning this party forever, and I was supposed to be in her court of people who will be dancing and sitting at the head table. Also, I already told my friend I might not be able to go, because I have to spend time with my family. She knows this, but of course she wants me to spend time with her on her party. She has been talking about this party sense last school year and it’s like the biggest thing that will happen for her.
Note: My sweet 16 was a few months before hers and all my friends got together and came to my party. They even put their money together and got me a gift that was over $200. However, the gift was a surprise and I repeatedly told my friends I didn’t want a party. I had the party anyway, because they said they had a big gift for me. Thusly, I feel like I’m unofficially required to go because they did all of this for me. I do want to seem like a bad or selfish friend, but I always spend my summer with my family.
Anyway, should I go to her party and be a good friend, or should I just go on vacation?

i understand your friends are important to you, and this party is important to your bff, but family, to me, is more important, and will ALWAYS be your family ... your friends now, most likely will not always be your friends, just cause that's the way life goes ... you grow up, you grow apart. i'd go on vacation. if your friends have a problem w/ that or don't understand or stop being your friends because of it, then that just goes to show you that they weren't your real friends to begin with.

Your family comes first. They will be there long after this friend has faded into the past. Buy a great gift and send it to her. You can also call her on the day of the party or connect via a webcam. She knows that you and your family always go away during the summer. She should expect that you have to be there rather than staying home all summer for one days party.

friends come and go, family is family. My daughter will soon be 19 and she has a ton of friends, but none of them would expect her to go to a party over her family vacation, ever! Give her a gift certificate, because when it comes right down to it, that's all kids at that age care about anyways....once your in college and away from from your family and OLD friends, you'll have wished you had spent that summer vacation with your family.....Parties are Over Rated, just ask Paris and Lindsey

hmm well you said "However, over the summer I always go on vacation with my family down south," so if you have always been going on vacation with your family, skip this one because she's your best friend and all. you can always go spend ur next vacation with your family another time :D
