I'm planing on buying a pulley for my 06 grand prix supercharger, on the web site it says "This additional heat may cause detonation which in turn will cause knock retard, robbing you of horsepower. If you are not doing something to prevent the detonation caused by a higher temperature intake charge, we recommend you stick with the 3.4" pulley" . what does it mean.

Unless you want to spen more $, stick with what you got.
I run a supercharger on an ecotec in a dune buggy. By the addition of an aftercooler (external radiator and fan for supercharger) I will increase horsepower by 40 or so. If you run a different pulley, you are forcing more air into your engine, causing more heat. Run an inner or after cooler to help reduce the internal heat and gain more power.

I had a 1997 grand prix and ran 165,000 miles with only three transmissions and two engines. I had S ported Magnusson supercharger with keyway so I did not need puller to change pulleys. and oil cooler for the engine transmission. I autocrossed ran it on road racing tracks with hoosier slicks. and ran 3.25 inch in the winter and 3.5 inch pulley in summer. It takes a special puller tool to take off the pulley. AND there are a bunch of great guys and girls in the Grand Prix Club That can help you put 25 to 30 more Hp just by changing the pulley. Stock pulley is 4" and get a new gatorback belt one or two sizes shorter.

excessive combustion temperature causes a phenomenon called detonation. this is when heat present in the cylinder causes the fuel charge to explode prior to the piston reaching the top position during the compression stroke(called top dead center). If it happend to far btdc (before top dead center) that puts a bind on internal engine components and creates a knocking sound. the engine has a device called a knock sensor whose job is to detect this occurance. when detonation is detected and reported by the knock sensor the engine control computer will begin to retard spark timing and add more fuel to make the combustion chamber temperature drop and stop the detonation. The farther before top dead center you can generate combustion without generating detonation the more power you will create. Im not a hot rodder but I would guess you would have to make internal engine changes to withstand the extra force or most likely find a way to richen up the fuel mixture to help cool combustion temperatures. Perhaps there is some sort of reprogramming you can do to egr operation under load conditions to help stabilizer combustion temperature. I dont know.

I do know this. if you dont know what that passage means perhaps you have no business doinking with your car. I would recommend leaving it like it was built before you blow up the motor and wont have any budget to repair it with cause you wasted your money on bullshiet.

It means that you should stick with what you have.

Unless you have an intercooler the air temp will be too high and it will rob you of power. It will cause the gas to explode instead of burning and could tear up your engine. good luck.

You can use any pulley you like. Sure, you're likely to get some pinging with higher boost, so retard your timing until it goes away..
