The best answer to this question is found in the Occupational Outlook Handbook, which is published by the U.S. government.

This site goes into great detail about the nature of the work you will experience in marketing:

There are a lot of potential paths you might go in. I've been a marketing professor for 28 years, and I just spent the morning looking for job openings for our recent graduates. I'm finding that most of our students are heading for jobs in one of several areas. First of all, the greatest number of jobs, and probably among the best paid, are in sales. This morning, for example, I found a posting for sales reps with Kraft Foods, offering a training program. Then a lot of students want to go into advertising or public relations of some sort. I found a number of entry-level jobs available for account coordinators or assistant account managers, some for traffic managers, and some for media assistants, all in major local agencies. Then we have people who want to go into financial services marketing (I found one or two of those available today), real estate, or the like. I have some alumni in major companies like Boeing, NCR, or Avery-Dennison, all doing basic marketing. I found several jobs in marketing research firms, doing analysis of marketing data (or, in some cases, since I'm in L.A., doing audience research). Entertainment and sports marketing are very popular, and I have former students in everything from youth soccer to major movie studios to video game companies. We have fewer students who go into logistics, but at other schools, that is very popular. They plan the transportation and inventory of goods. We do have people who go into the hospitality industry - hotels, resorts, cruise companies, and who work for the airlines. As I said, there are a lot of possibilities for all kinds of people.
