I just got a laptop with a dual-core AMD processor that runs at 1.8 GHz. Well, when I tried to play movies with iTunes, it didn't work. I was baffled. It turns out that the speed requirement was 2.0 GHz. So the moral of the story is, if you have a specific application you want to run and it says that the minimum processor speed is higher than the speed of one of your cores, you probably will not be able to make it work. Dual-core processors are fastest when you're using a bunch of programs . . . then the computer is able to accommodate all of them because of all the processing power. Maybe in the future a better system of programming these things will be devised that will allow us to easily program for multiple cores, but until that day you should consider these things. Don't get me wrong, dual-core is nice, but you have to consider the requirements of what you're going to run on it. Good night!

Consider the dual core to be two processors running at 1.8 ghz so thats actually like 3.6ish ghz. Thats not actually what happens but it suffices for basic understanding. Also, the dual core is optimized for multi tasking and more taxing programs such as video editing and game playing. Dont let clock speeds fool you as it is fairly easy to overclock a processor to achieve desired speed without emptying your wallet. (I am in no way reccommending you to overclock your processor. Do it at your own risk).
