You can go to Gateway and Dell websites and see what is on special. end of month, they usually have the best deals. You need 1 Gb of Ram minimum to run Vista, and 2 Gb would be better. Get Intel Dual Core processor. Better performance than AMD Athlon.

Best Buy also has good sales. I saw a Gateway notebook on sale in store for $799.99 yesterday. It included all of the things I think are "necessary." It is 15.4", and 6.29 lbs. which fits nicely into the backpack of a student.
Model M-6816 $799.99
Intel Core 2 Duo
Windows Vista Home Premium
2048 DDR Memory
160 GM Hard drive
Reads and Writes Dual Layer DVDs and CDs
Webcam
6.29 lbs

Get a Macbook. They are perfect. They are very fast, crash proof, fun, packed with features, and best of all they are the best deal. Mac is the most advanced operating system and it beats Windows in every catagory. Did you know Mac OS is 5 times faster then Windows Vista. Mac is easily the winner I got a Macbook and I would never switch back! Plus you can get Open Office for free if you need something that will open Microsoft Documents and save then in that format. iMovie is also great for video editing! If you get an Education discount you can get a Macbook for $900, or you can get a used one for around with a free $200 iPod Nano and $100 All in One Printer. Or you can get a used one for around $600 - $800 If you want to by it from Apple anyone can get the discount all they have to do is put down some school. (Or atleast thats what I heard I can't promise)

Try Toshiba Satellite A105-S4094, which costs $500 - $849. It has a Core 2 Duo Processor, 1.5GB of RAM, and 120GB of hard disk juice. It has also Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, and it has a great value for your money.

Go to HP.com or call them and tell them what you need it for and your budget and they will help you build a good system for your needs. You should be looking for a hard drive between 80- and 120 gb, 1gb RAM minimum, preferably 2gb, 128mb dedicated video card (if possible), built in wireless, and a processor thats no more expensive than about 150 dollars. everything else is up to you.
