you can save money and burn a linux live cd - it lets you boot and run linux all off one cd in your windows machine and all without altering your computer's main hard drive:

if you *would* rather buy a whole new machine with linux pre-installed, you can view these pages for online retailers:
http://www.linux.org/vendor/system/desktop.html
http://www.linux.org/vendor/system/laptop.html

if you try the live cd(s) and find you like a particular 'brand' of linux and want to swap from windows to linux permanently you can download for free the hard disc install versions:

Linux needs almost no heavy duty hardware to run. Most people that want to try Linux use an old computer they have upgraded from.

In fact many distros can be run from your cd/dvd player without any install.

DL one of these and try it out . If you like it there are many sources to get Linux. Since just about any computer will work that won't be a problem.

there is no such thing as a linux computer

buy a standard pc/laptop. Mostly comes with windows, try ordering it withouth an os.

Download the linux distro's iso file you want. Burn it to disk, boot the os from cd, press the install button

May I suggest using ubuntu linux, it's the best one for beginners.

www.ubuntu.org, you can download it from there.

actually dell has started selling computers with the ubuntu linux distro pre-installed on them [http://www.dell.com/open]... i currently use ubuntu & i find it very secure & easy to use, but the best part is that you can burn the os to a cd & it will run as a live cd so you can actually try out the os without any risk. i highly recommend ubuntu [http://www.ubuntu.com]

You have to buy (or build) a pc and install the Linux OS yourself.

Dell sells them: http://www.dell.com/ubuntu

You could also install it on the computer you have now, unless you were planning on replacing it anyway.

Good luck!
