...ah, a fellow fan of Blake Edwards' "The Great Race"!!!

Despite being a loyal purveyer of the horror film, I candidly admit that "The Great Race" is my absolute favorite movie; it's got everything...slapstick comedy, wild west shoot-em-up, mystery & intrigue, swordfighting, high-speed pursuits, just about everything, INCLUDING the kitchen sink....and some of the most eccentric, do-gooder, and hilariously moronic characters ever conceived.

This outrageously riotous film harkens back to the good old days of slapstick silent films, of the olden-staged vaudevilian comedy shows (...'boo' the villian, 'cheer' the hero, etc.), and the pure live-action essence, distilled from the classic Warner Bros. cartoons.

My personally favorite scene in the film, is the outrageous pie fight, in one of the royal kitchens of Potstorff, and involving our hero, The Great Leslie (who manages to perouse the kitchen, unscathed by the rampant flying pies, that is, until the end of the scene); his female counterpart, Maggie Dubois; his driver, Hezekiah; our dastardly villian, Professor Fate; his loyal henchman, Max; and last but not least, the very moronic, drunken and effeminate Prince Hapnik.

There ARE similarly comical films, made in the same vein as "The Great Race", from "Around the World in 80 Days" (1956), to "Those Daring Young Men in Jaunty Jalopies" (1969); for something horrifically slapstick, "The Fearless Vampire Killers" (1967) and finally, for something more contemporary, "The Gumball Rally" (1976), and "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" (1963).
