If you are a fundamentalist religious fanatic, then the World Trade Center can be viewed as a symbol of American power and values. It represents a materialistic business culture threatening traditional values all over the world. It could be viewed as an affront to God just like the Tower of Babel. In many ways it was the Tower of Babel, at one time the tallest building in the world, with people from all countries working in it, and mostly speaking a common language. I am not trying to justify this view, and I certainly don't agree with it, but that is how the World Trade Center was looked upon by Islamic fundamentalists. Plus the fact that a lot of people worked there and it is in the middle of the biggest city in the United States, so that if you destroy it you are going to kill a lot of people, get a lot of attention, and cause a lot of fear.

Because the twin towers were a symbol of wealth in America. The stock exchange and many rich corporations were housed in those towers.

This is ironic because most of the Muslim murderers that flew into the towers were from Saudi Arabia. This is a country where the Saudi royal family craps on golden toilet seats and swims in petroleum, the very symbols of extreme wealth and extreme fanatism. Why the heck is the West friends with Saudi Arabia? Perhaps we should be selling them barrels of fresh water for their oil.

In Osama's mind it was the symbol of America's power over all other countries, oppressing them under financial rule.
Considering many of the offices that where there, he wasn't to far off the mark on that. He is far too radical, and far too extreme, but not entirely stupid.
Globalism is something we all should be concerned about, but not to that extreme, because it will standardize the world economy benefitting poor countries at the expense of the middle class.
This is the type of situation where exercising your right to vote becomes more of a responsibility than a right.

The WTC was a symbol of the economic power and might of the United States. It is also a huge building that is impossible to miss. It is in one of the largest cities in the United States and is located in probably the most densely populated region of the United States, Manhattan. They also failed to destroy it in 1993.

Modern day terrorism is increasingly becoming a response to globalization (which disrupts and destroys non-western societies). What better way to attack the west and all it stands for by attacking a symbol of wealth & economic growth.
