some people dont want their kids to ever go to a community college and want their kids to go to a university.

does it really make a difference if you go to a community college then transfer to a university than someone else who went to a universitty for 4 years?

why do some people think community college is soo bad?

Some community colleges ARE really bad, so part of it depends on where you live. To be nonjudgmental and fair about it, you do need to recognize that the two are significantly different. Whether you consider one better than the other depends upon your preferences.

Many students view community colleges as an extension of high school. They may be in classes with the same people they knew before, and the experience may not feel very different if they are still living at home. Also, the faculty at a community college are usually essentially teachers, rather than professors (this may not be true in fields with too many Ph.Ds in which well-educated people with doctorates have trouble finding jobs at 4-year universities. They tend to teach more classes, and they convey information discovered by others, rather than being engaged in any original research themselves. They may be better at communicating information than those at 4-year colleges, but they are talking about research that other people did.

Some transfer students do really well, but others have trouble adapting. I teach at a university, and we really like transfer students, because they have developed some maturity (and the worst students have already flunked out), but the fact is that we have very little time to get to know them. I have students I've known since they first came to the university as freshmen, and I know a fair amount about them. I can write really complete references for them, and nominate them for awards and scholarships easily. I know very few transfer students well enough to be able to do that, because by the time they have shown their abilities, they are ready to graduate.

Wow great question! I think that there is NOTHING wrong with going to a community college! I currently go to one and I will be transferring to a 4 year University next year. Community colleges are great for the younger students who aren't quite ready to go to a huge university. For instance, I just turned 18 in January and I'm a sophomore. Well i admit, I wasnt quite ready for college & community colleges are good transitions from highschool. You learn responsibility but yet you still have that small amount of guidance. My aunt seems to think they aren't prestigious enough but I say so what! My GPA is a 3.6 & I have hope scholarship! most students go to college & do horrible their 1st year. So why not boost your GPA at an easier, smaller school, get your "college experience" and then transfer? Its a perfect Idea. Just because u didnt go to a university doesnt mean you can't still go to a 4year and take all the classes you need. Its a good motivation and step into maturity for those who don't know what to expect from college!

Sometimes private college is better. Especially if you know who you want to work for and what you want to do.

Going to CC first is a great idea. Not much difference in material. They have Leap classes now. That prepare you to make the transition from smaller to larger campus life.

I recommend CC first when possible. For a lot of reasons, the biggest being teacher to student ratio. Remember if you make the wrong choice it can cost ten grand (10,000 dollars) and upwards per year.

Big schools...another topic all together. You will see a lot of TA (Teachers) there along with the big name PHD s.

Good Luck

You can do it both ways. I like the idea of going to a community college to get good grades for one/two semeter(s) and then transferring to a four year university. I started with the 4 year uni at University of Michigan, but wished I did the cc idea.

It does not matter if you go to university or community colleges university is higher then community and there are some courses that community does not have so if you can afford university I would go to University because on your work resume it just looks good or better the stating you went to community college...good luck..
